I don’t watch enough Colbert. This one deserves some play. Walgreen’s? Really??
Also, I always love it when comics lose it on camera.

There are days when I love the Internet so much it burns my brain. This guy finds and compiles the bizarro results when Google’s satellite image processor goes a little haywire. Click through the photo to see the collection. Check out some of his other projects, too.

Thank goodness someone is thinking about this stuff.
This pretty much sums it up.
I wanted to post that Nid & Sancy song I mentioned yesterday, but Tumblr has a 10MB limit on audio file uploads, and it’s 10.3MB. However, you can go and listen to it at their download page (where, as I also mentioned yesterday, you can also download the entire compilation album Add Nightmare and Rinse for free). It’s the first one listed, No Fuck All.
I first heard this song in the SXSW 2011 torrent. Rhythmically and musically, it reminds me a lot of the Ting Tings’ That’s Not My Name, except the sound is a lot more fuzzed, the mood is a lot more angry, and the lyrics are a lot less work-safe.
OK, experiment time. I’m going to try to post a track every Friday by a new (to me) artist or band. In a burst if inspiration, I’ve titled this project “Friday Discoveries.” For the foreseeable future, they’ll be coming from the SXSW 2011 Showcasing Artists collection.
I wanted to post two songs to start this experiment off, since I’ve been listening to them quite a bit the past few days, but Tumblr limits me to one per day, so I had to pick one. Since the other was a Nid & Sancy track, and I posted that N&S video earlier, I went with Veronica Falls. (I may put up the other track over the weekend, extending Friday into Saturday or Sunday for purposes of discovery.)
My first thought when I heard this track was that they sounded a bit like Sons & Daughters (Wikipedia link, since their new website is not up yet) – male/female vocals in counterpoint, slightly jangly guitar, and simple but compelling rhythms – so I shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the band originally hails from Glasgow. The female lead vocals also remind me of one of my favorite now-apparently-almost-defunct bands, Delightful Young Man, so I was inclined to like the song. The vocals get swallowed up in the music a little, though I’m not sure if that’s a production issue or a problem with my listening system (iPod via car stereo and my ears). The song itself leans toward the Gothic, with its story of falling love with a ghost, but as I’ve just finished Jonathan Carroll’s The Ghost In Love, perhaps I’m more open to that conceptually.
Nid And Sancy – kidzz (Original Dub) (by nidsancy)
This surreal video shows off Belgian electropunk Euroravers Nid & Sancy pretty well. Reminds me of Soulwax, though the first N&S song I heard – No Fuck All, from the SXSW 2011 torrent – sounds like an edgier, grittier Ting Tings. Which is not a bad thing.
And yes, I suck at music comparisons. Didn’t I already establish that?
Oh, I almost forgot: To celebrate 10 years of being Nid & Sancy, they have released a 10-track compilation called Add Nightmare and Rinse for free download. Who can resist free music?
As if advertisers weren’t perceived to be obnoxious enough, media agency Ad Zookie has now introduced a new advertising model. They want to paint the outside of your home with an ad, and will pay your mortgage in return. The minimum you can have this ad up for is 3 months and it could be extended up to a year. Without warning? No idea.
If you’re going to do this, please read the contract in detail, maybe hire a lawyer.
I think this would only take off in poorer neighbourhoods and even then, who wants to be the a**hole who sold himself and his home to the devil advertisers and made the neighbourhood a pain in the eye?
Would you do this to your home? Think no money, struggling, etc.
UPDATE: I just asked two awesome (IMO) people if they would do this, and they said FOR MORTGAGE? ONLY A YEAR? I would totally do it. So maybe we should start getting used to home-ads.
UPDATE #2: Make that THREE people.
I’d actually consider this, although I know my wife would reject it out of hand and I’m sure I’d get plenty of complaints about bringing down the tone of the neighborhood, etc. Still, we have a prime location by a major road — I’d negotiate for more than a simple mortgage payment.
So, this looks good. Can’t wait for the new CD to…
…DROP.
